Introduction
In MFL our intent is to ENRICH the lives of students through the delivery of a curriculum which will instil in our students the desire and drive to pursue continued learning of languages, as well as important values for their futures. Learning a foreign language plays an important role in developing our students as respectful citizens who can positively contribute to life in modern Britain as part of the multi-cultural global community. We believe that learning a foreign language deepens students’ understanding of the world and enables them to appreciate and understand that people in other countries may see the world differently and lead very different lives.
Key Stage Three
In Key Stage 3, students have three forty-five minute lessons per week which are structured around the key strands of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. These aim to enable all students to communicate in the target language and they provide a solid foundation for the further study of French or Spanish at Key Stage 4. The MFL curriculum is designed to reflect the requirements of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum.
Key Stage Four
At Key Stage 4, students follow the AQA syllabus for both French and Spanish. The course consists of four examinations in the key assessment objectives of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. For the Speaking and Writing examinations, students develop their ability to express themselves in French or Spanish on the three GCSE themes: Identity and Culture, Local, National and Global areas of interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment. For the Listening and Reading papers, students learn to understand written and spoken texts on the same three themes.
